1. Pass your state's CDL written test. Every commercial driver must pass the general knowledge test. The general knowledge test covers basic road rules and safety information.

2. Not every written test is the same. Decide what vehicle you will be driving and take the endorsement tests that cover the vehicle. The air brakes, tanker, doubles, combination, haz-mat, and passenger make up all the endorsement tests. If you plan on driving a double trailer combination vehicle, take the air brakes test, combination test and the double trailer test.

3. Prepare for the written test. Take cdl practice tests online and get the your state's cdl handbook. Use one or both of these study methods. Be completely prepared it is a huge waste of both time and money to go to the D.M.V twice.

4. Go to the D.M.V and take the test. At the D.M.V the test may be given through a computer or on paper. Whether it is taken on paper or computer varies from state to state. You must get an 80% or better on each test to pass. The D.M.V will put your name in a database to log that you have passed.

5. Go to a training school or if you have access to a commercial vehicle you can practice on your own. Practice your basic skills test. This test consists of a few maneuvers that test your ability to straight back, parallel park, and offset back.

6. Practice for your pre-trip inspection test. Go around the vehicle and point out each part to the instructor and name it. If you can't name the part tell the instructor what it's function is.

7. Take the over the road test driving skills test. You will have to drive in the vehicle you wish to be licensed for. This test is much easier than the basic skills test. If you are driving a combination vehicle don't drag your trailer over curbs. You will have to drive your commercial vehicle around with an instructor for about half an hour. When traveling under bridges point out clearance level.
